As your attorney, I'll use my experience to help prevent charges from issuing, get charges dismissed, and if it comes down to it - take your case to a jury.

About Me

Matthew Burton is a criminal defense attorney practicing in all counties across the Commonwealth. He began his legal work in a law school clinic at Boston College. He successfully argued before the Parole Board and secured the release of a man previously convicted of second-degree murder. Thereafter, he was on a team that argued before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and won their client protection under the Convention Against Torture.  Immediately after law school, he joined a large litigation firm in New York City. He left that position to work full-time alongside Ron Kuby and Martin Garbus in defense of environmental lawyer Steven Donziger. The case culminated in a multi-day criminal trial in the Southern District of New York.

In addition to his work on the trial, Attorney Burton worked with
Donziger, as well as organizations such as Greenpeace and Amnesty International, to spread awareness of the plight of indigenous Ecuadorian populations struggling to navigate oil-polluted lands. Attorney Burton’s advocacy on this case helped to secure letters of support from elected officials including Elizabeth Warren, Ed Markey, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others. The awareness campaign also drew support from various celebrities including Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Roger Waters, and Lucy Lawless. After his work with Donziger, Attorney Burton became an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County. In this capacity, he honed his trial skills before starting his own practice.

Attorney Burton was featured in the Boston College Law School magazine where he discussed the loss of his parents as a child, and how that influenced his sense of justice and desire to work for those who are without material means. Attorney Burton earned his B.A. from Salem State University and his J.D. from Boston College. Prior to law school, he worked as a public-school English teacher.
